미국 하원은 17일 버마의 민주화 운동 지도자인 아웅산 수치 여사에게 민간인에게 수여하는 미국 의회의 최고상인 황금메달상을 수여하기로 만장일치로 결정했습니다.
수여안을 공동 발의한 도널드 맨줄로 공화당 하원의원은 이 상은 버마의 군부 장성들에게 ‘이제 참을 만큼 참았다’라는 강력한 메시지를 전달하는 것이라고 말했습니다. 맨줄로 의원은 이제는 버마 군부가 ‘진정한 화해’를 위해 문을 열어야 할 때라고 말했습니다.
이 수여안을 발의한 또다른 의원인 민주당의 조셉 크라울리 의원은 이 상은 아웅산 수치 여사가 버마 국민뿐만 아니라 미국 의회의 마음까지 사로잡은 것임을 보여준다고 말했습니다.
미 하원에서 400대 0으로 통과된 이 수여안은 곧 상원으로 회부됐습니다.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously Monday to bestow the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor in Congress, on Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Republican Representative Don Manzullo, who co-sponsored the bill, said the award sends a strong message to Burma's ruling generals that "enough is enough." He said it is time for the country's military leaders to open the door for "true reconciliation."
Democrat Representative Joseph Crowley, who also sponsored the bill, said the award showed that Aung San Suu Kyi had won the hearts of not only the Burmese people but the hearts and minds of the U.S. Congress.
The legislation passed with a vote of 400 to zero and now goes to the Senate, which must also approve the measure.
