부시 대통령은 지난 주 미국 애너폴리스에서 열린 중동 평화회의때 사우디의 압둘라 국왕과 이 문제를 논의하지 않았다고 밝혔지만, 국왕은 이 사건에 대한 미국의 입장을 잘 알고 있었다고 말했습니다.
사우디의 한 법원은 지난 주에 19살 난 한 시아파 회교 여성이 공공장소에서 외간남자와 함께 있었다는 혐의로 실형을 선고한바 있습니다.

President Bush has expressed disappointment with Saudi Arabia for a court's decision to sentence a victim of a gang rape to 200 lashes and six months in prison.
Mr. Bush told reporters at the White House today (Tuesday) that he would have been very emotional if his own daughter had endured such treatment. He said he would also have been angry at those who committed the crime and at a state that did not support the victim.
Mr. Bush said he did not discuss the issue with Saudi King Abdullah when the two met last week at a Mideast peace conference. But he said the king knows the U.S. position on the case.
A Saudi court sentenced the 19-year old Shi'ite woman last week for being in public with a man not related to her. The Saudi justice ministry says the woman and her companion were noticed by several men who kidnapped and raped both of them.
