러시아의 상트페테르부르크에서 25일 야당 지지자들과 폭동 진압 경찰간 충돌이 벌어져 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령에 반대하는 수백명의 시위자들이 연행됐습니다.
이날 연행된 야당 인사 가운데는 러시아에서 앞으로 실시될 대통령 선거에 출마 가능성이 많은 야당 지도자, 보리스 넴초프 씨도 포함됐으나 그는 후에 석방됐습니다.
목격자들은 경찰이 시위자들을 몰아 경찰 차량에 태우기에 앞서 불법인 '전국볼셰비키당' 당 소속의 운동가들을 곤봉으로 때리는 것을 목격할 수 있었다고 전했습니다.
이날 시위는 모스크바 시내 경찰이 이와 유사한 반 푸틴 시위를 해산시킨 지 24시간 만에 벌어진 것입니다. 이 시위에서 야당 지도자 개리 카스파로프 씨가 체포돼 금고 5일 형을 선고받았습니다.
푸틴 대통령이 민주주의를 억압하고 있다고 비난하는
"다른 러시아(Other Russia)' 라는 야당 연립 세력이 이들 두 시위를 주관했습니다. 러시아 의회 총선은 일주일 안에 실시될 예정입니다. 하지만 카스파로프 씨의 '연합시민전선' 당 소속 후보들은 이번 선거의 출마가 금지된 상태입니다.

Russian riot police clashed today (Sunday) with opposition supporters in St. Petersburg, arresting several hundred people protesting against President Vladimir Putin.
Those taken into custody include opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, a likely contender in Russia's upcoming presidential election. He was later released.
Witnesses say police could be seen clubbing activists from the banned National Bolshevik party before herding them and others into police vans.
The protest came 24 hours after police in Moscow dispersed a similar anti-Putin protest. Opposition leader Garry Kasparov was arrested and sentenced to five days in jail in that demonstration.
The opposition "Other Russia" coalition, which accuses President Putin of stifling democracy, organized both protests.
Russia's parliamentary elections are in one week. Candidates from Kasparov's United Civil Front party have been barred from the ballots.
