Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has imposed a state of emergency and suspended the constitution, thrusting the country deeper into political turmoil amid a wave of Islamist violence.
With the state of emergency, the government blocked transmissions of private news channels in several cities, and telephone services in the capital, Islamabad, were cut.
Troops were deployed throughout the capital, Islamabad, and around the Supreme Court building -- where justices were deciding on the constitutionality of General Musharraf's re-election earlier this month.
The court immediately ordered that the emergency declaration be suspended, but the government ignored the order.
State-run television says Chief Justice Iftikar Chaudhry has been removed from his position. General Musharraf tried and failed to oust Chaudhry earlier this year, sparking a popular movement against military rule.
The president is expected to address the nation later.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told CNN Television from Turkey that the emergency declaration in Pakistan is "highly regrettable." She urged retraint on all sides and a swift return to democracy.
Neighboring India also urged Pakistan's government to restore democracy.
