달로 날아간 중국 전설 속 선녀의 이름을 딴 중국 달 탐사위성 '창어 1'호를 실은 '창정' 로켓은 중국 남서부 쓰촨성 시창 위성발사센터에서 현지 시간으로 24일 오후 6시에 발사됐습니다.
11월 말쯤 처음으로 달 사진을 지구로 보낼 것으로 예상되는 창어 1호는 달의 3차원 입체 영상 전송 등 다양한 임무를 수행할 예정입니다.
이보다 앞서 몇 주일 전에는 일본이 달 탐사위성을 발사하는 등 아시아에서는 달 탐사 경쟁이 가열되고 있습니다.
중국은 2012년에 무인 달 탐사선을 달에 착륙시키고, 그후 우주인을 달에 보낸다는 야심찬 계획을 갖고 있습니다.
China has launched its first lunar probe into space, the first step in the country's ambitious plan to send an unmanned rover to the moon and return it to earth.
A Long March rocket carrying the probe blasted off shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) today (Wednesday) from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan.
The Chang'e 1 orbiter, named after a legendary Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, is expected to relay back its first picture of the moon in late November. The orbiter will carry out a series of projects, including acquiring three-D images.
Today's launch comes just weeks after Japan put its own lunar orbiter into space, as an undeclared space race in Asia heats up.
China hopes to land an unmanned rover on the moon's surface by 2012 and then put a man on the moon.
