U.N. envoy Ibrahim Gambari met with Indian leaders today (Tuesday), in a bid to encourage the world's largest democracy to break its relative silence over Burma's recent violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests.
During his two-day visit (ending today), Indian leaders told Gambari they supported the cause of democracy and efforts of the U.N., but also noted their opposition to coercive measures and condemnation.
Gambari says he is encouraged by India's comments and commitment to work with the United Nations.
India has cultivated close commercial and military ties with Burma in recent years to meet India's huge energy needs, and help it battle separatist rebels along its borders in the northeastern part of the country.
Gambari will leave India today for Beijing, and a visit to China as part of a six-nation tour of Asian nations to address the ongoing crisis in Burma.
Gambari will make his second visit to Burma next month.
