라이스 장관은 중동평화회의의 의제를 설정할 공동 문서에 대한 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 간의 큰 입장차이 때문에 이번 면담에서 돌파구를 마련하기를 기대하지 않는다는 신중한 입장을 밝혔습니다.
팔레스타인 정부는 공동 문서에 예루살렘과 팔레스타인 난민, 최종 국경선 문제 등 주요 사안의 해결을 위한 시간표를 포함하기를 원하고 있습니다. 하지만 이스라엘은 일반적인 원칙의 선포를 선호하고 있는 입장입니다.
올메르트 이스라엘 총리는 라이스 장관과의 면담에서 공동 문서에 대한 합의는 중동평화회의의 전제조건이 아니라고 말했습니다.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in the West Bank for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the scope of a proposed Mideast peace conference.
Rice arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah today (Monday) on the second day of her latest Mideast tour. Her convoy was briefly delayed while on the road from Jerusalem because of a security scare.
Secretary Rice has played down hopes of a breakthrough between Israel and the Palestinians because of disagreements about a joint document that would set the agenda of the peace conference.
Mr. Abbas' government wants the document to set a timetable for resolving key disputes such as the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees and final borders. Israel prefers a vague declaration of principles.
Rice met Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who said an agreement on a joint document is not a pre-requisite for the conference.
