러시아 외무부는 미국 뉴욕 지방법원이 미국 주재 러시아 외교관 블라디미르 쿠즈네초프를 돈세탁 혐의로 7만 3,000달러의 벌금과 함께 4년 3개월의 징역형 판결을 내린데 대해 비난했습니다.
러시아 외무부는 13일 발표한 성명에서 블라디미르 쿠즈네초프의 러시아 송환을 요구했습니다.
유엔 예산감시위원장을 역임한 그는 과거 5년간 유엔과 계약을 원하는 외국 회사로부터 불법적인 돈을 받은 뒤 그 돈을 숨기기 위해 역외회사를 설립했다는 혐의를 받고 있습니다.
쿠즈네초프는 오는 22일에 미 펜실베이니아 연방 감옥에 수감될 예정이며, 석방된 이후 2년동안 경찰의 감시를 받게 됩니다.
러시아 외무부 소속인 그는 계속 그의 무죄를 주장하고 있으며, 그의 변호인들은 오는 22일까지 항소할 방침입니다.
Russia's Foreign Ministry has criticized a U.S. court decision to sentence a Russian diplomat to more than four years in prison for money laundering, in connection with his former post at the United Nations.
The ministry said in a statement (Saturday) it may request Vladimir Kuznetsov's return to Russia.
The former diplomat, who once chaired the U.N. budget committee, was sentenced Friday in a New York district court which also ordered him to pay a $73,000 fine.
Kuznetsov maintains his innocence and his lawyers say they will appeal the sentence, which begins on October 22nd.
In March, a federal jury in New York found Kuznetsov guilty of helping another U.N. employee launder more than 300-thousand dollars in bribes in connection with the now-defunct oil-for-food program for Iraq.
