Hungarian officials say 28 Cuban refugees intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard after fleeing their homeland are now in Budapest and will be granted political asylum.
Authorities say Hungary based its decision to accept the refugees mainly on humanitarian grounds and that the refugees are among 44 Cubans who were captured in recent years while attempting to reach the U.S. by sea.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Lajos Szelestey tells VOA the Cubans arrived in Budapest under an agreement with Washington and that previously, they were held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay.
Seventeen of the refugees are reported to have held a three-week hunger strike in August to protest alleged poor conditions at Guantanamo and the unwillingness of U.S. authorities to grant them asylum.
Cuba condemned Hungary's decision, calling Hungary a "lackey" of the United States.
