The Israeli army has admitted that three Palestinian children killed by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip earlier this week were simply playing near rocket launchers and had nothing to do with Palestinian militants.
The army said today (Friday) an internal investigation into the incident has revealed that the children were not involved in hostile activity.
Two children, who were cousins aged 10- and 12, died Wednesday when Israeli soldiers opened artillery fire on a field in northern Gaza. A third child, a young female cousin of the victims, was critically wounded and later died.
After the incident, the Israeli army said soldiers opened fire after spotting several people handling rocket launchers in the area.
The army expressed sorrow for the deaths of the children but held Palestinian militants responsible for using civilian cover for firing rockets.
