Pakistan's army says security forces have killed at least 12 militants in a major attack on pro-Taleban hideouts in the tribal region of North Waziristan.
An army spokesman (Major General Waheed Arshad) said today (Wednesday) that helicopter gunships blasted suspected militant hideouts Tuesday about 20 kilometers from Miranshah, the region's main town. Eight militants were also wounded in the operation.
At least three civilians, including two children, were injured when a stray mortar hit their home.
The Pakistani government is battling pro-Taleban militants in tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, but the United States has been pressuring authorities to do more.
Thursday Afghan and Pakistan tribal elders are due to begin a grand assembly (jirga) aimed at reducing support for the Taleban.
