Pakistani authorities say suspected militants have opened fire on a military convoy in the country's northwestern tribal region, killing at least 16 soldiers.
Intelligence officials say at least 14 other soldiers were wounded in today's (Wednesday's) attack in North Waziristan. Some of the attackers may also have been killed or wounded.
Earlier, a roadside bomb exploded near a military convoy in the same region, wounding one security official and at least six civilians.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said today that he will not impose a state of emergency in response to a recent increase in militant attacks. More than 100 people have been killed by bombs or shootings in the country's northwest this month.
Attacks have also taken place in the country's capital. Today, the death toll from a suicide attack at a crowded anti-government rally in Islamabad rose to 16.
