조지 부시 미국 대통령은 7일 독일 하일리겐담에서 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과 만나 러시아가 반대하고 있는 미국의 동유럽 미사일 방어체제 구축 계획을 논의했습니다. 부시 대통령은 이날 회담이 건설적이었다고 평가했습니다.
푸틴 대통령은 미국과 러시아가 중앙아시아 아제르바이잔에 공동으로 미사일방어 기지를 설치할 것을 제안했습니다.
푸틴 대통령은 일함 알리예프 아제르바이잔 대통령이 미-러 양국간 미사일 위기 해소를 위해 미국 미사일 방어체제의 일환으로 러시아산 레이더를 아제르바이잔에서 사용하는데 대해 합의했다고 말했습니다.
이에 대해 부시 대통령은 “흥미로운 제안”이라며 다음달 미국 북동부 메인 주 케네벙크포트에서 푸틴 대통령과 논의를 계속할 것을 기대한다고 말했습니다.
주요 선진 8개국 G8 정상회담에 참석중인 두 정상은 이날 별도로 회담을 가졌습니다. 미국은 폴란드와 체코에 미사일 방어 체제를 구축할 계획입니다.

U.S. President George Bush and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, summit have called constructive their talks about Russian objections to U.S. plans to build a missile defense system in Europe.
Mr. Putin said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had agreed on the use of a Soviet-built radar in Azerbaijan as an element of the U.S. missile defense system, leading to an easing of Russian concerns over the system. Mr. Bush called the suggestion interesting and said he looks forward to continued dialogue with the Russian leader next month in Kennebunkport, (in the northeastern U.S. state of) Maine.
The two men spoke after talks on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Heiligendamm, Germany.
Russia previously threatened to target European countries with its missiles if the U.S. proceeds with plans for the defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the G-8 leaders have agreed to set a goal of pursuing substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change. She says they approved the accord involving a clear commitment to continue the United Nations climate process after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.
