호주의 알렉산더 다우너 외무장관은 중국의 군비증강이 지역 안정에 대한 위협으로 보지 않는다고 말했습니다.
다우너 장관은 6일 도쿄에서 일본관리들을 만나기에 앞서 기자들에게 이같이 말하고 중국의 군비 증강은 많이 과장돼 있다고 말했습니다.
다우너 장관은 북한의 위협과 테러대처방을 논의하기 위한 일본과 호주사이의 첫 안보협의위원회 참석차 도쿄를 방문하고 있습니다. 이번 회의에는 일본의 아소 타로 외상과 큐마 후미코 방위상, 그리고 호주에서는 알렉산더 다우너 외무장관과 브렌든 넬슨 국방장관이 참석했습니다.
일본과 호주는 이번 회의가 군비를 증강하고 있는 중국을 견제하기 위한 목적의 행사는 아니라고 말하고 있습니다.
한편 다우너 외무장관은 북한의 핵무기와 미사일 프로그램은 지역 안정에 실질적인 위협이라고 말하고 북한과 테러리즘의 위협에 대처하기 위해 호주는 일본과의 동맹관계를 더욱 강화하길 원한다고 말했습니다.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says his government does not view China's military buildup as a threat to regional stability.
Speaking in Tokyo today (Wednesday) before talks with Japanese officials, Downer said concerns about Chinese defense spending are "much exaggerated."
Tokyo has often urged Beijing to be more transparent about its military expansion.
Downer says he believes China is not interested in territorial expansion or exporting its ideology, with the possible exception of Taiwan. He says China's overriding policy objective is economic prosperity.
The Australian foreign minister says North Korea's nuclear weapon and missile programs pose what he calls a "real threat" to the region. Downer says Australia wants a closer alliance with Japan to deal with North Korea and the threat of terrorism.
Downer and Australian Defense Minister Brendan Nelson are in Tokyo to discuss strategic issues with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma.
