The United Nations (UNESCO) and journalists around the world are marking World Press Freedom Day today (Thursday) by expressing concern for journalists' safety.
UNESCO observed the day in Medellin, Colombia, saying journalists around the world face increasing danger from kidnapping and assassination -- especially in conflict zones.
Press freedom groups around the world are calling attention to the fate of kidnapped journalists, such as BBC correspondent Alan Johnston, who was seized in Gaza City several weeks ago. The Palestinian government has said that Johnston is alive, but that his kidnappers have made demands for his release.
The U.N. (UNESCO) awarded this year's (Guillermo Cano) World Press Freedom prize to Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered in Moscow in October, 2006. According to Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans Frontieres), she was one of 110 journalists killed in 2006 -- the deadliest year for journalists since 1994.
