유럽연합, EU는 시리아가 전쟁으로 황폐화된 이라크에서 대거 탈출한 난민들을 감당해 낼 수 있도록 만들기 위해 시리아 정부를 지원하겠다고 제의했습니다.
EU의 루이스 미첼 구호담당 조정관은 이라크 난민들의 곤경을 해소하기 위해EU가 시리아 정부에 대해 기술적 지원을 포함해 다른 지원 등을 제공할 것이라고 말했습니다.
미첼 조정관은 29일 다마스커스에서 시리아의 바샤르 알-아싸드 대통령과 이라크 난민 사태를 논의한 뒤 그같이 말했습니다.
유엔은 미국 주도의 이라크 침공이 시작된 이후 120만 명의 이라크 인들이 시리아로 탈출한 것으로 추산하고 있으며 지금도 이들 난민의 탈출은 계속되고 있습니다.
미첼 조정관은 중동 지역내 인도주의 문제를 점검하기 위해 현재 이 지역을 방문하고 있으며 앞서 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 지역도 방문했습니다. 미첼 조정관은 또한 요르단도 방문할 예정입니다.

The European Union has offered Syria assistance in managing the massive number of Iraqi refugees fleeing their war-torn country.
EU aid commissioner Louis Michel says the bloc will lend technical support and other aid to Syria's government to improve the plight of Iraqi refugees.
Michel spoke after discussing the refugee situation with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad today (Sunday) in Damascus.
The United Nations estimates that one-point-two million Iraqis have entered Syria since the start of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and continue to pour in each day.
Michel is currently exploring humanitarian issues in the region on a tour that has brought him to Israel and the Palestinian territories. He is also scheduled to travel to Jordan.
