일본의 도요타 자동차는 지난 1/4분기에 사상 처음으로 경쟁사인 미국의 제네랄 모터스 GM을 제치고 세계 제1의 자동차 회사가 됐다고 밝혔습니다.
도요타는 24일, 지난 1월부터 3월까지 전 세계에서 235만대의 자동차를 판매해 226만대 판매에 그친 GM을 앞질렀다고 말했습니다.
도요타는 고유가로 소형차와 연비가 높은 도요타 차량들의 인기가 높은 미국 시장에서 강력한 성장을 누리고 있습니다.
반면, GM은 휘발유 소비가 많은 트럭과 스포츠 유틸리티 차량에 대한 수요 감소로 지난 해 생산량을 줄였습니다.
GM은 현재 일자리 감축과 공장 폐쇄 등이 포함된 대대적인 구조 조정을 진행하고 있습니다.
GM은 연간 기준으로는 아직도 세계 제1의 자동차 회사로 남아 있습니다.

Japan's Toyota Motors says it became the world's top selling automaker in the first three months of this year, surpassing U.S. rival General Motors for the first time.
Toyota said today (Tuesday) it sold two-point-three-five million vehicles worldwide from January to March, beating GM, which reported selling two-point-two-six million.
Toyota is enjoying strong growth in the United States, where its compact and fuel-efficient cars are popular because of high gas prices.
GM cut production last year because of falling demand for gas-guzzling trucks and sport utility vehicles. The U.S. automaker is in the middle of a major restructuring program, which includes job cuts and plant closures.
GM remains the world's top automaker on an annual basis.
