영국은 자국 해군 15명이 이란에 체포된 사건 이후, 해당 수역에 대한 선박 검사 활동을 중단했습니다.
조나단 밴드 영국 해군참모총장은 6일 영국 방송과의 인터뷰에서, 영국 해군이 관련 임무에 대해 검토하고 있으며 그 동안 임무 수행을 잠정 중단했다고 말했습니다.
이란 해군은 지난달 23일에 상선에 대한 검사 활동을 벌이던 영국 해군 15명을 영해 침범 혐의로 체포했으며, 5일 석방했습니다.
해군들은 이후 자신들이 매우 힘든 구금 기간을 보냈다는 성명을 발표했습니다.
한편 석방에 앞서서 이란 텔레비전에서는 일부 해군이 마흐무드 아흐마디네자드 대통령에게 직접 사과하는 장면이 방영됐습니다. 영국은 여전히 이들이 이란 수역이 아닌 이라크 수역에 있었다는 입장입니다.
토니 블레어 영국 총리도 해군들의 석방에 있어서 이란에 대해 어떠한 거래나 사과도 하지 않았다고 말했습니다.

Britain has suspended its practice of boarding and inspecting vessels in the Persian Gulf, following Iran's detention of 15 British naval personnel in disputed waters.
In an interview with British radio today (Friday), Britain's navy chief Jonathon Band said operations are temporarily halted as the navy conducts a review of the practice.
Iranian forces seized the 15 British sailors and marines March 23rd after they boarded and inspected a merchant ship. Iran released the captives on Thursday.
The former detainees have issued a statement calling their ordeal "very difficult."
Before their release, some of the captives were seen on video apologizing to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Britain says the naval personnel were in Iraq's waters, not Iran's.
Prime Minister Tony Blair says Britain gained freedom for the personnel without making any deals or apologies to Iran.
