Iran's ambassador to Russia has renewed a threat Iranian officials made earlier this week, saying 15 detained British sailors and marines could be tried for violating international law.
Gholam-Reza Ansari told Russian television (Vesti-24 Friday) that Iran has begun a legal investigation of the British sailors. He said they would be tried if there is evidence of guilt, and they would punished if convicted.
A British Foreign Office spokeswoman says the remarks do not change Britain's position. She says London has made it clear the sailors were in Iraqi waters when they were seized, and that the government wants them returned.
After a Friday meeting in Germany, European Union foreign ministers warned Iran that the EU would take "appropriate measures" if the 15 were not released immediately.
