U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has discussed Saudi Arabia's recent criticism of the U.S. presence in Iraq with the Saudi ambassador.
State Department officials say Rice phoned Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir to talk about remarks by Saudi King Abdullah that referred to the U.S.-led mission as "an illegal foreign occupation."
A spokesman declined to give details of the conversation.
The White House has defended the U.S. military presence in Iraq, saying American troops are there under the authorization of the United Nations and at the invitation of the Iraqi government.
On Wednesday, King Abdullah told Arab leaders in Riyadh that Arab governments must unite to prevent foreign powers from dictating to the region. He also said sectarian violence in Iraq is leading to a civil war.
