수백만명의 북한 주민들이 흉작과 해외 식량지원 감소로 인해 올해 굶주림을 겪게 될수도 있다고 한 유엔 관계관이 경고했습니다.
유엔 세계식량계획의 앤소니 밴버리 아시아국장은 북한은 전체 식량 수요량의 20%에 달하는 100만 t의 식량이 부족하다고 밝혔습니다. 6 일 일정의 북한 방문을 마치고 베이징에 도착한 밴버리 국장은 28일 기자들에게 이같이 말했습니다.
밴버리 국장은 북한 관리들은 지난 2005년 말부터 시행돼온 유엔 식량지원에 대한 규제 정책을 번복하고 최근 식량지원의 증대를 요청했다고 말했습니다. 밴버리 국장은 정치적인 논쟁들 때문에 일반 주민들이 굶주리게 되어서는 안된다며 기부국들에게 북한을 도와줄 것을 촉구했습니다.
해외 식량 기증국들은 북한이 지난해 북핵 6자회담 복귀를 거부하고 미사일 시험발사와 핵실험을 단행하자 대북한 지원을 크게 줄였습니다.

A U.N. aid official says millions of North Koreans may go hungry this year because of a poor harvest and a large drop in foreign donations.
Anthony Banbury, the Asia regional director for the World Food Program, says North Korea is facing a food shortfall of one million tons, or about 20 percent of its needs.
Banbury spoke to reporters in Beijing today (Wednesday) after completing a six-day trip to North Korea.
He said North Korean officials have asked for increased food donations, reversing a policy of restricting U.N. food aid introduced in late 2005.
Banbury called on donors to help North Korea, saying political disputes should not prevent ordinary people from having sufficient food.
Foreign donors sharply reduced aid to North Korea last year after Pyongyang boycotted nuclear disarmament talks, test fired ballistic missiles, and conducted a nuclear test.
