아프리카 연합 (AU)는 짐바브웨에서 야당 인사들이 경찰에 의해 폭행당한 것으로 알려진 가운데 짐바브웨 정부에 대해 인권을 존중할 것을 촉구했습니다.
알파 우마르 코나레 AU 의장은 17일에 발표한 성명에서 짐바브웨가 인권과 민주주의 원칙을 성실히 지켜야할 필요성을 인식한다고 말했습니다.
짐바브웨에서는 지난 11일 수도 하라라에서 주요 야당인 민주변화운동 (MDC) 이 집회를 갖는 가운데 경찰이 이들을 해산시키는 과정에서 폭력을 사용한 것으로 알려지면서 정치적 위기에 휩싸였습니다.
모간 창기라이 MDC 당수 등 몇몇 야당 지도자들은 경찰에 의해 심한 구타를 당했다고 말했습니다.
창기라이 당수는 하라레 병원에서 두개골 부상 등으로 치료를 받은 뒤 16일에 퇴원했습니다.
창기라이 MDC 당수는 짐바브웨에 민주적인 변화가 일어날 때 까지 로버트 무가베 대통령 정부가 대항해 투쟁할 것을 다짐했습니다.

The African Union is calling on Zimbabwe to show respect for human rights in the aftermath of the alleged beating of opposition members by government authorities.
A statement released today (Saturday) says A.U. chairman Alpha Oumar Konare recognizes the need for "scrupulous respect for human rights and democratic principles" in the southern African nation.
Zimbabwe's latest political crisis began last Sunday when police broke up a gathering of the main opposition party (Movement for Democratic Change) in the capital, Harare. Several opposition leaders say they were brutally beaten, including (MDC) party head Morgan Tsvangirai.
He was released from a hospital in Harare Friday after treatment for head injuries.
Tsvangirai has vowed to continue fighting against the government of President Robert Mugabe until democratic change comes to Zimbabwe.
