The trial has begun on the outskirts of Madrid for 29 defendants charged with involvement in the city's deadly train bombings in 2004, Spain's worst terrorist attack.
Security near the courthouse is tight today (Thursday), and Spanish authorities have raised the country's terrorism alert level as a precaution.
Most of the defendants are Moroccan, with six identified as the chief organizers. Some face sentences of more than 38-thousand years in prison if found guilty. But under Spanish law, 40 years behind bars is the most time they could serve.
Several badly wounded survivors of the blasts are scheduled to testify.
Spanish authorities believe al-Qaida was behind the attack, which destroyed four packed commuter trains in Madrid's main station on March 11th, 2004. The bombings killed 191 people and wounded 18-hundred.
