미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 부시 행정부는 이란이 이라크의 저항분자들에게 무기와 기술을 제공한 증거를 일부 포착했다고 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 9일 스페인의 남부 도시 세비야에서 열린 북대서양조약기구 나토 국방장관 회의에서 이같이 밝혔습니다.
게이츠 장관은 이라크에서 발견된 폭발물들의 일련번호와 다른 표식들은 이란이 이라크전쟁에 개입했음을 보여주는 “꽤 믿을만한 증거인것으로 전해들었다고 말했습니다.
부시 행정부는 그동안 이란이 이라크내 종파간 공격들을 자행하고 있는 시아파 민병대들과 연계돼있다고 주장해왔습니다.
부시 행정부는 이란의 영향력을 약화시키기 위한 전략으로 미군에 이라크내 이란 공작원들을 살해하거나 생포하라고 지시한 것으로 미국의 ‘워싱턴 포스트’ 신문은 최근 보도했습니다.
미 관리들은 이같은 보도 내용을 부인했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Bush administration has some evidence that Iran has provided weapons or technology to insurgents in Iraq.
Gates spoke today (Friday) in the southern Spanish city of Seville at a NATO defense ministers conference. He said he has been told that serial numbers and other markings on explosives found in Iraq offer "pretty good" evidence of Iran's involvement.
The Bush administration for some time has alleged Iranian links to Shi'ite militants involved in sectarian attacks in Iraq.
A Washington Post newspaper report said recently that the Bush administration has authorized the U.S. military to kill or capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as part of a strategy to weaken Tehran's influence. Officials have dismissed the report.
