당국은 미군 병력이 이라크 군의 지원요청을 받고 이 전투에 가담했다고 말했습니다. 미군당국은 전투가 현재 계속되고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 유엔 아동 기금 유니세프는 8일 늦게 바그다드에서 이라크 출신 소속 요원 한명이 총격을 받고 사망했다고 말했습니다.
이런 가운데 지난달 교수형에 처해진 이라크 전 독재자 사담 후세인의 시신을 보여주는 새로운 동영상이 9일 인터넷에 게재됐습니다. 휴대폰으로 촬영된 이 동영상에는 사담의 목이 피에 범벅이 된채 심각하게 꺾어진 모습이 드러나 있습니다
이 동영상에는 교수형을 당한 후세인의 시신을 서둘러 촬영하는 사람들의 대화 내용도 녹음돼 있습니다.

A fierce gunbattle raged in central Baghdad today (Tuesday).
The U.S. military says the fighting erupted when U.S. and Iraqi troops came under mortar and rocket-propelled grenade attack during a raid in the Haifa Street area.
The military says the operation is continuing.
News reports from Baghdad say American warplanes are flying low over the area, which is a known stronghold of Sunni insurgents.
Separately, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said one of its Iraqi staff members was shot dead in Baghdad late Monday. The agency said it did not know the motive behind the killing (of Janan Jabero) -- or who was responsible.
In other news, a new video posted on the Internet today (Tuesday) shows the body of Saddam Hussein after he was hanged last month (-- on December 30).
The clandestine mobile phone recording shows a sheet being removed to reveal Saddam's neck severely twisted and with a gaping, bloody wound.
A voice on the footage was heard addressing someone named Abu Ali and urging him to "hurry up."
