부시 대통령은 이날, 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관, 스티븐 해들리 국가안보보좌관과 함께 로버트 게이츠 신임 국방장관과 회의를 갖고 새 이라크정책에 관해 논의했습니다.
지난 주에 게이츠 신임 국방장관은 3일간 이라크를 방문해 미군 사령관들과 이라크 지도자들과 만나 폭력 완화 방안에 관해 협의했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 잠정적으로 이라크의 미군 병력수를 증강할 것인지의 여부에 관해 밝히지 않고 있습니다.
이라크에서 경찰은 이날, 주로 시아파들이 거주하는 남부의 사마라 시에서 충돌이 있었다고 보고했습니다. 이라크 보안군과 급진적인 성직자 모크타다 알-사드르에게 충성하는 시아파 민병대간의 충돌로 적어도 5명이 사망하고 17명이 부상했다고 경찰이 말했습니다.

President Bush is holding high-level meetings on Iraq today (Saturday) as he prepares to announce a new strategy for reducing sectarian violence there.
Mr. Bush is meeting with new Defense Secretary Robert Gates as well as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley. The president is expected to announce his new Iraq strategy in January.
This past week, Gates spent three days in Iraq speaking with U.S. military and Iraqi leaders about strategies for reducing violence. He has not said whether he will recommend a temporary increase in U.S. troop levels.
In Iraq, police report clashes in the mainly Shi'ite southern city of Samawa. They say the fighting between Iraqi security forces and Shi'ite militia fighters loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr left at least five people dead and 17 others wounded.
