시아파 과격단체 헤즈볼라가 이끄는 반 정부 시위자 수천명은 10일 레바논의 수도 베이루트에서 서방국의 지지를 받는 레바논 정부에 대해 사임할 것을 촉구하는 대규모 시위를 벌였습니다.
야당 지지자들은 지난해 12월 1일부터 베이루트 중심부에서 농성하며 도시를 마비시키고 있습니다. 시위자들은 푸아드 시니오라 충리가 국가화합 정부를 구성하라는 자신들의 요구를 받아들일 때 까지 해산하지 않겠다고 주장하고 있습니다.
시니오라 총리는 10일 협상을 가져야 한다면서 사임하지 않을 것이라고 거듭 밝혔습니다. 시니오라 총리와 회교 수니파가 주도하는 집권당은 시아파 헤즈볼라가 앞서 올해 34일간 벌어진 이스라엘과의 전쟁의 여파로 쿠데타를 일으키려 한다며 야당의 요구를 거부했습니다.
정치 관측통들은 양측간의 대립이 심화되면서 대규모 폭력사태가 벌어질 수 있다고 경고한 바 있습니다.

Thousands of Hezbollah-led protesters have gathered in Lebanon's capital for a rally, demanding the Western-backed government step down.
Opposition supporters have been camping out in central Beirut since December first, paralyzing the capital. Protesters have vowed not to move until Prime Minister Fuad Siniora bows to their demands for a national unity government.
Mr. Siniora once again today (Sunday) said there should be negotiations, but he insisted he will not resign.
The prime minister and the Sunni-led ruling majority have refused opposition demands, accusing the Shi'ite Hezbollah of trying to stage a coup in the aftermath of their 34-day war against Israel earlier this year.
Political observers have warned that the worsening standoff could lead to wide-scale violence.
