Suspected Shi'ite militiamen attacked Sunni Arab mosques in Iraq's capital today (Friday), in apparent retaliation for a wave bombings a day earlier that killed more than 200 people.
Witnesses in Baghdad say militiamen fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, and set fire to four mosques during a rampage aimed at Sunni Arabs (in the Hurriyah section of the city).
Initial reports say at least 24 people were killed.
Meanwhile, militiamen clashed with U.S. forces today (Friday) in the Shi'ite Sadr City neighborhood, the scene of Thursday's deadly bombings. The Bush administration in Washington called Thursday's attack a senseless act. It was the deadliest since the Iraq war began in 2003.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan condemned the attacks and called for restraint from all Iraqis to prevent a further escalation.
Grieving relatives are burying the remains of those killed by Thursday's bombs. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered police to guard funeral processions (traveling from the capital to the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf).
