타이완 의회의 야당 의원들은 천수이벤 총통을 권좌에서 몰아내기 위한 탄핵안 가결에 실패했습니다.
24일에 실시된 표결에서 천총통에 대한 탄핵안은 통과에 필요한 146표보다 적은 118표의 지지를 받았습니다.
이 안은 천수이벤 총통을 계속 재임시킬 것인지의 여부에 관한 주민투표실시를 결정하기 위한 것입니다.
하지만 이 탄핵안은 통과될 가능성이 거의 없었습니다. 집권 민진당이 천수이벤 총통을 계속 지지함으로써 야당 의원들이 이 안을 통과시키기 위한 3분의 2 과반수 의석을 확보할 수 없기 때문입니다.
이번 탄핵안은 지난 6개월 사이 야당에 의해 세번째 시도된 것이었습니다.
검찰은 지난 11월 초 천수이벤 총통 부인을 공금횡령 혐의로 기소했습니다.
천 총통은 이 공금횡령 사건에 개입된 것으로 의심받고 있으나 재임 중에는 그에 대해 어떠한 고발도 할 수 없습니다. 천총통과 부인은 모두 어떠한 잘못도 저지르지 않았다며 그같은 혐의를 일축하고 있습니다.

Opposition lawmakers in Taiwan's parliament have failed to win approval for a recall motion aimed at removing President Chen Shui-bian from office.
Today's (Friday's) motion won 118 votes, short of the 146 needed for it to pass. The motion would have authorized a referendum on whether Mr. Chen should remain in office.
The motion had little chance of passing. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party's continued support of Mr. Chen means that opposition members cannot collect the necessary two-thirds majority in parliament.
It was the third recall attempt by the opposition in the past six months.
Prosecutors indicted Mr. Chen's wife (Wu Shu-chen) in early November, accusing her of embezzling government funds.
Mr. Chen is suspected of involvement in the case, but cannot be charged while in office. Both deny any wrongdoing.
