미국 국무부는 앞서 13일 베트남 정부의 종교 단체에 대한 처우가 개선됐다며 종교 자유를 침해하는 심각한 우려 대상 국가 목록에서 베트남을 삭제한다고 밝힌 바 있습니다. 미국 정부는 지난 2004년부터 베트남을 특별 우려 대상국에 포함시켜왔습니다.
미국 관리들은 13일 발표에서 베트남이 종교 자유 사안에 관해 상당한 진전을 보였다고 말했습니다. 베트남 정부는 몇년전 강제로 폐쇄했던 수 백개의 기독교 교회들에 대해 다시 종교활동을 허용하고 종교 관련 수감자들을 석방한 바 있습니다.

Government officials in Hanoi are welcoming the United States' decision to remove Vietnam from a list of countries that severely violate religious freedoms.
A Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesman (Le Dung) says the U.S. move reflects the reality in Vietnam, as well as improved U.S.-Vietnamese relations.
The (U.S.) State Department dropped Vietnam from a list of (eight) "countries of particular concern" due to their treatment of religious groups. Washington had placed Vietnam on the list in 2004.
(In announcing the action Monday,) U.S. officials say Vietnam has made significant progress on religious-freedom issues. The communist state has reopened hundreds of Christian churches that were forcibly closed years ago.
Vietnam has annulled laws that restrict religious activities, and authorities in Hanoi also have released scores of prisoners held on charges related to religious activity.
