Two of the United State's chief allies are calling for dialogue with Iran and Syria on ending the violence in Iraq and promoting peace in the Middle East.
Officials say British Prime Minister Tony Blair will talk about how Iran and Syria can help the peaceful development of the Middle East in a foreign policy speech today (Monday) in London. He also will warn the two countries of the consequences of hindering peace.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard says he supports talking with Tehran and Damascus about Iraq because they are "part of the equation".
But, he says he is "very skeptical" that Iran and Syria can be honest partners in dialogue. Mr. Howard noted that many people consider the two governments directly responsible for the much of the violence in Iraq.
