부정부패 혐의로 퇴진 압박을 받고있는 타이완의 천수이벤 총통은 자신과 부인이 국가 기금을 횡령했다는 검찰 측의 주장을 부인했습니다.
천 총통은 5일 텔레비젼으로 전국에 방영된 연설에서 이같은 부정혐의는 고통스러운 것이라며 판사에 의해 유죄판결을 받을 경우에만 총통 직에서 물러나겠다고 말했습니다.
지난 주 타이완 검찰은 천 총통의 부인 우수전 씨를 공금횡령과 문서 위조, 위증 혐의로 기소했습니다.
우수전 씨와 총통 측근 세 명은 지난 2002년에서 2006년 사이에 특별 외교자금 45만 달러를 착복한 혐의를 받고있습니다. 타이완 검찰은 천 총통 역시 기소할 만한 충분한 증거를 확보하고있다고 말하고 있습니다.
천 총통은 국가원수로서 면책특권 때문에 2008년 임기가 끝날 때 까지는 기소를 면할 수 있습니다. 타이완에서는 5일 수천명의 야당 지지자들이 천 총통의 사임을 요구하는 시위를 벌였습니다.

Taiwan's embattled President Chen Shui-bian is refusing to resign and is denying prosecutors' allegations that he and his wife have embezzled state funds.
In a nationally televised address today (Sunday), Mr. Chen said the corruption allegations are painful, and said he would quit his office if he is convicted by a judge.
The president and his family have been the target of corruption rumors for months. Last week prosecutors indicted his wife, Wu Shu-chen, on embezzlement, forgery and perjury charges.
Wu and three presidential aides are accused of taking 450-thousand dollars from a special diplomacy fund between 2002 and 2006.
Prosecutors said there is evidence against the president, as well. but Mr. Chen is immune from criminal charges until his term ends in 2008.
Thousands of opposition supporters in Taiwan held protests today (Sunday), calling for the president's resignation.
