Washington's ambassador in Tokyo says Japan needs to decide whether it will defend its U.S. ally by shooting down an enemy missile.
Ambassador Thomas Schieffer said today (Friday) Japan's answer to that question will be critical to the future of the countries' alliance.
Japan and the U.S. are developing a joint missile defense system to counter a threat posed by North Korea, which tested a nuclear weapon earlier this month and has vowed to defend itself against what it considers U.S. aggression.
But Japan's pacifist constitution bans the use of force to solve international conflicts, and it is unclear whether the country can intercept missiles that might not be heading to Japan.
