China has rejected criticism by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz that Beijing is ignoring human rights and environmental standards in Africa.
A spokesman for the foreign ministry in Beijing today (Tuesday) called Wolfowitz's comments unacceptable. He said China's trade relations with Africa benefit the African people and the continent's economic and social development.
The comments come after Wolfowitz, in an interview with a French newspaper (Les Echos), said Chinese banks were ignoring a voluntary code of lending conduct known as the "Equator Principles."
These principles call for private lenders to ensure projects they fund meet social and environmental standards.
The comments come ahead of a China-Africa summit to be held next month in Beijing. The Chinese government has been promoting trade with Africa as it seeks raw materials and energy, as well as new markets for Chinese goods.
