미국에 주재 중인 한 쿠바 외교관은 24일 기자들과 만난 자리에서 카스트로 의장이 건강 상태가 날로 호전되고 있으며, 곧 의장직을 다시 수행할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
지난 7월 카스트로가 장 수술을 받은 후, 동생 라울 카스트로가 의장직을 대행하고 있습니다.
수술 이후 카스트로의 상태가 악화됐다는 외부의 추측에도 불구하고, 쿠바 정부는 꾸준히 상태가 호전되고 있다는 발표를 해왔습니다.
이달 초 라울 카스트로는 80세 된 자신의 형이 “죽어가고 있지 않다”고 말했었습니다.

Cuba's top diplomat in the United States says ailing President Fidel Castro will soon return to power.
Dagoberto Rodriguez told reporters today (Tuesday) that Mr. Castro's health has been improving daily and that he will soon assume his responsibilities again as president.
Castro ceded power to his brother Raul Castro at the end of July after undergoing intestinal surgery.
Since the surgery, Cuban officials have stated frequently that Mr. Castro was doing well as speculation swirled that his condition was worsening.
Earlier this month, Raul Castro said his 80 year old brother was "not dying."
