미국의 11월 중간선거가 3주도 채 남지 않은 가운데 미국인 과반수는 집권 공화당이 주도하는 의회에 대해 낮은 지지율을 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.
미국 공중파 방송인 NBC와 일간지 월 스트리트 저널이 공동 조사한 여론조사 결과 단지 응답자의 16퍼센트만이 현 의회의 업무수행능력에 지지를 표해 지난 1992년이후 가장 낮은 지지율을 기록했습니다.
응답자의 52 퍼센트는 또한 이번 중간선거를 통해 민주당이 의회를 장악하기를 선호해 37 퍼센트의 지지를 받은 공화당보다 15 퍼센트나 높았습니다. 이번 여론 조사 결과는 이라크 전쟁에 대한 우려와 국회 청소년 사환들에게 선정적인 전자메일을 보낸 마크 폴리 전 공화당 하원의원의 성추문 스캔들이 불거지는등 공화당이 여러 악재들로 곤혹을 치루고 있는가운데 실시돼 주목을 끌고 있습니다.

A new opinion survey shows a majority of Americans have a low opinion of the Republican controlled U.S. Congress as the November elections draw closer.
A joint poll conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal reveals that only 16-percent of respondents approve of the job Congress is doing -- the lowest approval mark for Congress since 1992.
The survey also says that 52-percent of respondents prefer that the Democrats take control of Congress, compared with 37-percent who want Republicans to stay in power. The results come amid continued concerns about the war in Iraq and a scandal involving a former U.S. presentative
(Republican Mark Foley of Florida) who sent lurid e-mails to teenage congressional aides.
The poll also shows that President Bush's approval rating is at 38-percent.
