라이스 미 국무장관은 아랍 동맹국들에게 지역 평화 를 위한 노력과 사면 초가에 빠져 있는 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 수반을 위한 지지를 강화해줄 것을 촉구했습니다. 라이스 장관은 카이로에서 이집트 지도자들, 그리고 여러 아랍 관리들과 회담을 마친후 압바스 수반을 공개적으로 치하하는 자리에서 이를 분명히 했습니다.
라이스 장관은 압바스 수반이 그가 이 아랍 동맹국들사이에서 얼마나 칭찬을 받고 존경받고 있는지를 알기 바란다고 말했습니다 . 라이스 장관은 또 압바스 수반과 팔레스타인인들을 돕고자 하는 크나큰 열의들이 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
아랍 지도자들은 오랫동안 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 문제가 중동 분쟁의 핵이라고 말해왔습니다.
라이스 장관은 리야드와 카이로에서 회담을 갖는 동안에도 비슷한 메시지를 들었습니다. 아흐메드 압둘 게이트 이집트 외무장관은 팔레스타인 문제를 역내 고민거리라고 말했습니다. 사우드 알 파이잘 사우디 외무장관은 이스라엘- 팔레스타인간의 갈등이 과격 분자들의 온상을 만들고 있다고 우려했습니다.
미국은 압바스 수반이나 파우드 시노이라 레바논 총리처럼 온건한 아랍 지도자들을 지지하는데 있어 역내 동맹국들의 더 많은 지지가 있기를 바라고 있습니다. 그러면 미국과 이스라엘 정부가 테러단체들로 규정하고 있는 하마스나 레바논에 거점을 둔 헤즈볼라 같은 단체를 고립시키는데 도움이 될 것으로 미국 정부는 기대하고 있습니다.
미국 정부는 또 이란과 시리아의 역내 영향력이 억제되기를 바라고 있습니다. 미국은 이들 나라가 테러리즘을 후원하고 있다고 비난하고 있습니다. 두 나라는 미국의 이 같은 혐의를 모두 부인하고있습니다.
라이스 장관의 중동 순방은 폭력사태가 증가하고 있는가운데 이루어진 것으로 이번의 폭력사태는 팔레스타인인들간의 권력 갈등때문인 것으로 비춰지고 있습니다.
지난 며칠동안 요르단강 서안과 가자지구에서는 하마스 정권에 충성하는 과격분자들과 압바스 수반의 파타당 소속 급진 주의자들간의 총격전이 발생해 최소한 12명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 4일 오전에는 복면을 한 무장괴한들이 요르단강 서안 북부 지역에서 하마스 지도자를 살해했으며, 파타당 과격 분자들은 고위 하마스 지도자들을 살해하겠다는 위협 성명을 발표했습니다 .
라이스 장관은 4일 라말라에서 압바스 수반과 만난후 저녁에는 예루살렘에서 에후드 올메르트 이스라엘 총리와 회담을 가질 예정입니다.U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is due to meet Wednesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and also holds talks with Israeli leaders. The aim is to shore up support for the Palestinian leader and boost efforts for a resumption of peace talks - all amid rising violence between Palestinian factions.
Secretary Rice has come to urge Arab allies to bolster support for regional peace efforts and for the beleaguered Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
That was clear in the open praise she had for the Palestinian leader after her talks in Cairo with Egyptian and other Arab officials.
"I would hope that he [Abbas] knows how admired he is and how respected he is in this group," she said. "There is a great desire to help him to help the Palestinian people."
Arab leaders have long said that the Israel-Palestinian issue is at the core of conflict in the Middle East. Secretary Rice heard much the same message during her talks in Riyadh and Cairo. Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit called the Palestinian problem the scourge of this region, and Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al Faisal said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is creating a breeding ground for extremism.
The United States wants greater support from regional allies to bolster moderate Arab leaders like President Abbas and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora. In turn, Washington hopes that will help isolate groups like Hamas and the Lebanese-based Hezbollah, which the United States and Israel consider terrorist groups. Washington also hopes to curb the influence of Iran and Syria, which it accuses of supporting terrorism -- a charge both those countries deny.
Secretary Rice's visit to the region comes amid increasing violence, this time between Palestinians in what is seen as an ever growing power struggle. At least a dozen people have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza, during the past several days, in gun battles between militants loyal to the Hamas government and those linked to President Abbas's Fatah faction. Wednesday morning, masked gunmen killed a local Hamas leader in the northern West Bank and Fatah militants have issued death threats against senior Hamas leaders.
Secretary Rice is due to meet with President Abbas in Ramallah, Wednesday, before holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem in the evening.
