The political scandal surrounding a former U.S. congressman accused of sending sexually explicit Internet messges to young boys continues to spread, as critics focus on the House Republican leadership.
A leading U.S. conservative newspaper, "The Washington Times," called today (Tuesday) for the resignation of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, accusing him of failing to deal properly with the activities of Mark Foley, who until last week was a Republican representative from (the southern state of) Florida.
The speaker (who is in effect chairman of the House of Representatives) sought an investigation Monday of all aspects of the Foley scandal. Hastert said he wants to know who in Congress might have been aware of the congressman's behavior, but failed to stop it.
Until Friday, Hastert says, he had not seen any of the lurid messages that marked Foley's Internet conversations with teenage boys working at the Capitol.
The newspaper's editorial statement charges Hastert either was grossly negligent, for overlooking early warning signs about Foley's activities, or that he deliberately looked the other way (deliberately ignored the problem) in an attempt to smother the scandal.
