Chinese President Hu Jintao has pledged support for Venezuela's bid to get a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Mr. Hu met today (Thursday) with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who is visiting China. Mr. welcomed China's support, saying it is very important from a political and moral point of view.
The United States opposes Venezuela's bid to join the Security Council. The U.N. General Assembly will elect new council members in October.
The Venezuelan and Chinese leaders also announced a deal to cooperate on oil exploration in Venezuela. China's booming economy needs more energy. Venezuela is one of the world's top oil exporters.
