일본의 대형 유조선 한 척이 인도양에서 화물선과 충돌하면서 4500 여 톤의 원유가 누출됐습니다. 미국의 소리 특파원이 도쿄에서 전해온 소식입니다.
스리랑카와 인도네시아 사이에 위치한 니코바르섬에서 서쪽으로 약 500 킬로미터 떨어진 지점에서 일본 유조선과 화물선이 충돌하면서 수천 톤의 원유가 인도양 해상으로 누출됐습니다. 일본으로 향하던 대형 유조선 브라이트 아르테미스호는 당시 거친 파도 속에서 불에 휩싸인 소형 화물선의 선원들을 구조하려 시도 하고있었습니다.
사고 당시 브라이트 아르테미스호는 25만 톤의 원유를 싣고있었다고 유조선 소유주인 미쓰이 OSK 사의 시카노 대변인은 말했습니다. 시카노 대변인은 이번 충돌로 인해 사고 유조선과 화물선의 원유 저장소가 파열됐다고 말했습니다. 그는 사고 사상자는 발생하지 않았으며 파열된 저장소에 남아있는 원유는 다른 저장소들로 옮겨져 더이상의 원유 누출이 저지됐다고 말했습니다.
미쓰이 OSK사는 사고 유조선은 다시 항해를 재개했고 수리를 받을 수 있는 항구를 찾고 있다고 말했습니다.
한편, 싱가포르 국적의 사고 화물선 아마르의 선원들은 전원 구조됐습니다. 24년전에 일본에서 건조되어 싱가포르에서 등록된 브라이트 아르테미스호는, 오만과 사우디 아라비아에서 경질 원유를 선적했었습니다.
미쓰이 OSK사 관계자들은 사고당시 만 톤급 화물선이 돌풍에 밀려 일본 대형 유조선과 충돌했다고 밝혔습니다. 이 충돌로 인해 유조선의 우현측 선체에 길이 5 미터 , 높이 1 미터의 구멍이 파였습니다. 회사 관계자들은 인도와 싱가포르 연안경비대에 사고사실을 통고했다고 말했습니다.

INTRO: A Japanese supertanker in the Indian Ocean has spilled as much as 45-hundred tons of crude oil after a collision with a cargo vessel in distress. VOA's Steve Herman reports from Tokyo.
TEXT: Thousands of tons of oil have leaked into the Indian Ocean after the two ships collided about 500 kilometers west of Great Nicobar Island between Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
The Japan-bound supertanker was attempting to rescue, in rough seas, the crew of the cargo vessel, which had caught fire.
The tanker is owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. Company spokesman Kenji Shikano tells VOA News the Bright Artemis was carrying 250-thousand tons of crude when the accident happened.

Shikano says the collision ruptured two of the ship's oil tanks. He says none the crew was injured and the leak was contained after the remaining oil in the damaged tanks was transferred to other tanks.
Mitsui O.S.K. says the tanker is underway again, searching for a port where it can make repairs.
The crew of the Singaporean-flagged cargo vessel, the Amar, has reportedly been rescued.

The Bright Artemis, built 24 years ago in Japan and registered in Singapore, had loaded the light crude in Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Mitsui O.S.K. officials say the accident happened when a gust of wind blew the 10-thousand ton cargo vessel into the supertanker. The collision caused a five-meter long, one-meter high gash in the bigger vessel's starboard hull.
Officials of the Japanese company say they have notified the Indian and Singaporean coast guards about the incident. (Signed)
