Israeli media say the country's security cabinet has decided against expanding ground operations against Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.
Officials say Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the cabinet that Israel's goals are being met. The ministers agreed to press on with a combination of aerial bombardments and limited ground incursions into Lebanon. They also called up thousands of reserve soldiers to refresh Israeli forces.
Mr. Olmert's cabinet met today (Thursday), a day after Israel suffered its heaviest single-day losses in the more-than-two-week fight. On Wednesday, nine Israeli soldiers were killed and 25 others were wounded in fighting to
take the Hezbollah stronghold of Bint Jbail.
Israeli forces pounded southern Lebanon with heavy artillery and air strikes again today (Thursday). At least three Lebanese were killed. And Hezbollah fired more rockets into southern Israeli, hitting several buildings. A barrage of rockets hit the Israeli town of Kiryat Shemona, destroying a factory.
Meanwhile, Israel's Justice Minister (Haim Ramon) says the international meeting in Rome that ended without agreement on a ceasefire Wednesday gave Israel the permission to continue its offensive.
