China's government says the number of its citizens using the Internet has jumped to 123 million.
The official China Internet Network Information Center says in a report issued today (Wednesday) that is an increase of almost 20 percent over the previous year.
The country now has the world's second-largest Internet-using population, after the United States.
As popularity of the World Wide Web grows in China, the government has shown increasing concern over its potential for use in allegedly subversive activities.
Last month, officials said they were tightening supervision of the Internet, specifically search engines and so-called "blog" Web sites.
International human rights groups are critical of China's government for its record of imprisoning people for their comments and reports posted on the Internet.
