Voters in Mexico go to the polls today (Sunday) to decide whether the next president should be a conservative, who believes a free market is the path to prosperity, or a leftist who says he will put the poor first.
The latest public opinion polls indicate a statistically even race between conservative Felipe Calderon of the National Action Party and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, of the left leaning Party of the Democratic Revolution.
Calderon, 43 years old, served in President Vicente Fox's Cabinet as Energy Minister. He has promised to carry out broad economic and political reforms if elected.
Fifty-two-year-old Lopez Obrador is regarded as a populist who has based his campaign on promises to reduce poverty.
