경찰당국은 18일 푸놈펜 북서쪽 한 교도소에서 복역중이던 수감자 1명이 교도관을 인질로 잡고 탈옥을 시도했다고 말했습니다. 관리들은 약 40명의 수감자들이 이 탈옥 미수 사건에 관련되어 있다고 말했습니다.
캄보디아의 교도소는 수감자들이 프랑스 식민시절 세워진 낡은 시설의 비좁은 감방에서 복역해야 하는 열악한 조건으로 남아시아 지역에서는 최악의 하나로 꼽히고 있습니다.

At least eight inmates and a prison guard have been killed during a failed jailbreak in northwest Cambodia.
Police officials say inmates took a guard hostage during the breakout attempt today (Sunday) in a prison (in Battambang province) northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh.
The officials said about 40 prisoners were involved in the failed escape attempt. Police say the prison is now under control.
Prison conditions in Cambodia are among the worst in Southeast Asia, with inmates crammed into tight cells in crumbling French-colonial era facilities.
