More than 200 people have been injured in clashes between Bangladeshi police and opposition activists trying to blockade the capital, Dhaka, in defiance of a court order.
Witnesses say police used sticks, tear gas and some gunfire against protesters, who threw stones and set fires in retaliation.
Among the injured were police, protesters, and opposition leaders, including the country's former army chief (K.M. Shafiullah).
The protest called the "Dhaka Siege" was organized by a coalition of 14 opposition parties. Its aim is to get the government of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to implement electoral reforms ahead of January elections.
