미국에서 광범위한 이민법 개혁과 보다 강력한 국경 단속이 촉구되는 가운데 조지 부쉬 대통령은 15일 밤 이민에 관한 대국민 연설을 할 예정입니다.
스티븐 헤들리 국가안보보좌관은 부쉬 대통령의 대국민 연설은 국경통제와 국내 안보 그리고 현재 제안중인 초청근로자 계획등에 관한 내용이 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
헤들리 보좌관은 CNN-TV에 출연해 현재 부쉬 대통령이 고려 중인 선택방안 가운데 하나는 불법 입국을 막기 위해 접경 지역에 국가방위군 병력을 파견하는 것이라고 말했습니다.
헤들리 보좌관은 정보 수집과 훈련, 병참 등 국경 수비 요원들을 돕기 위해 국가방위군 일부 병력이 이미 해당 국경 지역에 파견돼 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
그러나 공화당 소속의 척 헤이글 상원의원은 국경수비를 돕는 일이 군이나 국가방위군의 역할은 아니라고 지적했습니다. 헤이글 의원은 ABC-TV 방송에 출연해 국가방위군병력이 이라크에 이미 너무 많이 배치돼 복무하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

President Bush is to deliver a speech on immigration Monday, amid calls for broad reforms and tighter border security.
National security advisor Stephen Hadley says the televised speech will be about border control, internal security and a proposed guest worker program.
Hadley told CNN television that one of the options being considered by the president is to send National Guard troops to the border to help prevent illegal crossings.
He said some National Guard troops have already been sent to help border agents with intelligence gathering, training and logistics.
But Senator Chuck Hagel, a member of the president's Republican Party, said the role of the military and National Guard is not to help provide border security.
He told ABC television that National Guard units are already being stretched to serve in Iraq.
