동남아 국가연합(아세안) 회원국의 국방장관들이 기구 39년 역사상 처음으로 모임을 갖고 다양한 분야의 협력문제를 논의하고 있습니다.
9일 말레이지아 수도 쿠알라룸푸르에서 회담을 가진 아세안 국방장관들은 재난 구조, 인명보호, 테러, 해적행위, 인신매매, 밀수등 국경을 넘나드는 범죄에 대한 상호협력방안을 논의했습니다.
버마는 국내사정을 이유로 참석하지 않았습니다. 아세안의 한 대변인은 버마의 불참을 불행한 일이라고 묘사했습니다. 아세안 회원국들은 민주화 개혁을 추진하도록 버마에 압력을 가하고 있으며, 군사 쿠데타가 이 지역의 평판을 훼손하고 있다고 비판하고 있습니다.
회담 참가국은 브루네이, 캄보디아, 인도네시아, 라오스, 말레이지아, 필리핀, 싱가포르, 베트남, 태국등입니다.

Defense ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are meeting together for the first time in the organization's 39-year history.
Today's (Tuesday's) gathering in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, aims to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN members on disaster relief, human security issues and transnational crime, including terrorism, piracy, trafficking and smuggling.
Burma opted not to attend the meeting, citing domestic commitments. A spokesman for the ASEAN secretary-general has called Burma's absence "unfortunate."
ASEAN members are pressuring Burma to make democratic reforms and complain the military junta is damaging the region's reputation.
Officials are attending the talks from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand.
