Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is offering to form a short-term coalition government with center-left leader Romano Prodi, as the prime minister's attempts to gain victory through a vote recount fail.
In a letter published today (Saturday) in a leading Italian newspaper (Corriere della Sera), Mr. Berlusconi says last week's parliamentary elections have produced a "stalemate," with no apparent winner or loser.
Official results have yet to be announced, but Mr. Prodi is rejecting the offer to form a coalition and is urging the prime minister to concede defeat.
Mr. Prodi's center-left coalition won the elections by a razor-thin margin. Mr. Berlusconi challenged the results, claiming widespread irregularities. But his efforts sustained a crippling blow Friday when the Interior Ministry sharply reduced the number of disputed ballots from 80-thousand to five thousand.
