앙겔라 메르켈 독일 총리가 이틀 간에 걸친 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 방문을 위해 이스라엘에 도착했습니다.
메르켈 총리는 에후드 올메르트 이스라엘 총리 권한대행과 만나는 데 이어 마흐무드 아바스 팔레스타인 자치정부 수반과도 회담할 예정입니다.
하지만 지난주 실시된 팔레스타인 입법회의 선거에서 과반수를 차지한 이슬람 과격단체 하마스 관계자들과는 만나지 않습니다.
독일 정부 대변인은 하마스는 독일과의 대화에 앞서 먼저 이스라엘의 존재를 인정하고 폭력을 포기하며, 국제적 약속들을 존중해야 한다고 말했습니다. 메르켈 총리는 이번 방문 중 이란의 핵 계획에 대해서도 논의할 예정입니다.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Israel for a two-day visit to the Jewish state and the Palestinian territories.
During the next 24 hours, Ms. Merkel is to meet with Israel's acting prime minister, Ehud Olmert, and later with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. But the chancellor has no plans to meet with members of the Islamic militant group Hamas, which won a majority in Palestinian elections last week.
A German government spokesman has said Hamas must first recognize Israel's right to exist, renounce violence, and honor international commitments before Germany will consider talks with the group.
Ms. Merkel is the first European leader to visit the Middle East since Hamas trounced Fatah, the ruling Palestinian group, in legislative elections.
Ms. Merkel is expected to discuss Iran's nuclear ambitions during her visit.
