Ballot-counting is under way in Iraq, where sporadic violence failed to derail a historic vote for a new four-year parliament. Election officials report strong turnout across the country. Polling was extended an hour in some areas Thursday to accommodate long lines of voters.
Final results for the 275-seat parliament are not expected for at least two weeks. The Election Commission said it would look into some complaints about the vote. Insurgency-plagued western Iraq had a shortage of ballots due to high turnout among Sunni Arabs who mostly boycotted the last election.
In Washington, President Bush called the vote a "major step forward" in helping to create a democratic Iraq that can sustain and defend itself. U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said the election was a defeat for enemies of the Iraqi people.
